The infamous Whaley House has unofficially been given the title "The Most Haunted House in America", and with good reason. From the street, you can see a shadowy figure peering out of the window. The smell of cigar smoke and lavender perfume still pops up spontaneously. Walking through the archway to the parlor room[closed off to the public] causes a slow choking sensation similar to being put in a noose. That spot is believed to be where the gallows stood and where Yankee Jim took 1 hour to die after being hanged. Miss Whaley can be seen on the stairs. In the courtyard, there is a little girl named Haily who enjoys holding older lady's hands. There is also reported to be a ghost of a dog running around there. However, the popular story of the girl crushing her neck on a clothesline is untrue. It is impossible for a girl to crush her neck on a clothesline because clotheslines are always set up pretty high, and no kid is that tall.

Tip 1 Go at night for an extra scary night.
Tip 2 It costs money to go in the house but you can always check it out from outside and look around Old Town to see some SD history.

Keith Petersen My family story is that my great grandpa lived in the Whaley house at one time and sold appliances from the building. Not 100 percent sure if it is true but that is the story. I have been in a few times and it is worth it if you are into this type of thing. Sorta pricy.
